Marine Barn

Designed by David O’Brien Wagner

with Brittny Roberts

Situated against a steep, forested hillside, and facing a naturally spring-fed pond, Marine Barn both harmonizes with the landscape from the interior, and brings a delightful exterior contrast to the natural elements surrounding it. The owners sought a separate retreat space away from the main house for guests, but also for musical composition, study, and contemplation.

The new barn replaces a former two-car garage located on the same footprint, but adds a workshop to one side and an open carport to the other. An interior stairway leads up to a spacious and light-filled loft. Mirrored at each end of the loft, a pair of windows follow the form of the roof and look out to stunning views –east to the pond and west up into the forested hill. Flanking each side of the main gable roof are two shed-dormers that bring light to the stairwell to the north, and to the spacious bathroom to the south.

A simple material palette consists of cedar board-and-batten siding, an exposed concrete foundation, and hot-dip-galvanized metal roofing and flashing. Douglas fir porch flooring has been creatively used for interior paneling (where it has been white-washed) and for exterior siding at both the lower workshop and upper dormers. Inside, white-painted steel beams contrast with warm-gray oak flooring, and with naturally-finished accents of Douglas fir trim and cabinetry.
