Riverhouse

Designed by Katherine Hillbrand
with Meghan Kell and Deb Kees

This home is a subtle interruption in an ancient footpath along the banks of the Black River in Wisconsin. Two elongated forms, one for sleeping, the other for entertaining family and friends, straddle the path and overlap at the entry. The two pavilions are spliced together by a circulation corridor defined by a clerestory above that brings natural light to both the living and sleeping spaces. A screened room at one end extends living out into the landscape while timber and glass walls blur the distinction between inside and out, summoning natural shade and light into interior living spaces. Subtle tones and spare furnishings focus attention on exterior views. Glass walls reflect trees during the day blending the structure further into its setting. Simple forms and indigenous ledge-stone walls strengthen its camouflage. Smooth black river stones and native plantings run parallel to the linear plan echoing river and path.
