Foxtail Barn

Designed by Michaela Mahady
with Meghan Cornell with Maury Stenerson and Judy Ferrell

This house was created for a couple long enamored with the picturesque barns of New England. It is set into the rim of a stone cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

At 5,500 square feet, the house is quite spacious. But the masses of the house, linked by a green roof, are discrete pieces. The rooms within them are of intimate scale.

The complex of familiar, barn-like forms beckon the visitor to an engaging entry at the base of the silo, which contains a stair connecting all four levels and culminating with an eagle’s nest perch offering views of the water. As the house/barn proceeds down the steep hillside, it breaks into more abstract volumes, anchored by stone piers to the rocky site.

The interior spaces are carefully crafted of natural fir, stone, metal and concrete. They comfortably contain collections of Native American and folk art and a colorful array of handmade quilts created by the owner.
