Bay Tower Addition

Designed by Paul Buum

with Marcy Townsend

With their third child sleeping on a landing at the top of the stair, this family needed a fourth bedroom. This served as the impetus for a project that included a main-level renovation, kitchen remodel with built-in booth, a new mudroom and half bath and a couple’s suite. Zoning constraints denied expanding the footprint, resulting in the main level being remodeled from within. The additional bedroom grew from an existing bay window into a two-story tower crowning the second level. A light-gathering, south-facing dormer was added to space above the garage, creating a couple’s suite with bed, bath and closet. The new addition aesthetically complements the existing brick cottage, transforming the house while accommodating its growing family.
