The owners of a beautiful 1930s era brick and limestone European -villa style home in the Lake Calhoun area were looking to update their master bedroom area to accommodate a larger master bath and closet area, while right-sizing the master bedroom space.

The couple wished to retain the historic character of the home, particularly the exterior windows and façade. But they also desired a modern interior that could mesh well with historic bones of the architecture.

Our solution focused first on re-scaling the interior of the bedroom by inserting a furniture-like “closet box” to the end of the room away from the existing bay windows. A new built-in bed platform with side tables is captured within the end of the “closet-box” and orients the bed toward the light and view provided by the windows. A pair of doors leads behind the headboard of the bed where a step onto a wood platform marks the threshold of the “closet box”.

Sliding door panels open to a remodeled and expanded bathroom. Here again, furniture-like cabinetry pieces provide storage and vanity space. Existing window jambs are fitted with thin plate steel to create clean edges that align with the coursing of new subway tile.
