In designing this kitchen, we were challenged with making a dark compartmentalized kitchen and living space into a light, cohesive environment conducive to family interaction. Site limitations made it undesirable to alter the external footprint of the home to gain kitchen space, and this focused us on carefully crafting the interior volumes in subtle, yet transformative ways.
Despite the delineated rooms, the existing layout functioned poorly. By relocating the refrigerator, we were able to reconfigure the landing to the basement and simplify the circulation pattern with a direct, open link to the dining and family rooms beyond.
Clean and spare detailing clarifies the space; red oak flooring adds warmth, while a large window with an extended marble sill allows natural light to permeate the space and reflect off the white millwork and glass cabinets. The resulting place reveals itself to you as you spend time inhabiting it – an activity the family is happily doing these days.
