Pajaro Libre

The little phoenix literally rose out of the ashes of an incinerated landfill on a tight urban lot in Linden Hills. We tore down a small house and built another one in its place. At 1950 square feet, the house echoes the scale and texture of the neighborhood while at the same time injecting new life and animation into the street. Its sustainable blend of permeable pavers, galvanized metal roofing, ipe and periwinkle cement board siding clearly make it the perky new kid on the block.

My client is quite a free spirt who spends much of her time flying back and forth from Mexico, enjoying the beaches and collecting folk art. She didn’t want a big house, but rather a modest one, with spirit, to shelter her collectables and bathe her in light. And she wanted a yard and a pool a playground for grandkids as well as herself!

The house has two bedrooms, two baths and a laundry up, and the main level sports a mudroom, bath, office, stair gallery, kitchen/living/dining, and a sunroom with built-in seating. You’ll find another 750 square feet of finished space below grade with a half bath, an art room, and a play space as well as an amphitheater exit to the descending yard with its pool and pool house. And there are decks and porches, fore and aft, for mingling with the neighbors and keeping an eye on the street
