Shopa Residence

The multiple projects over time are a testament to the strong client-architect relationships so essential in achieving good design that meets the functional needs of the client. So often residential design experiences are a one-time effort.

Extensions of the base house started with the screen porch (1997) and ended with the bedroom extension (2008). The core of the building was addressed during the middle years with an entry extension and Japanese-style bath (2003-2005).

The challenging site provided appropriate limitations to scale and budget, befitting the clients’ desire to work with the existing house, extending space and views. All of the extensions were built at site setbacks at one corner or another.

The original 1960s modern ranch provided good bones from which to achieve the clients’ desire for modern and Asian influences. Sloped wood ceilings, reflective of traditional Japanese ceilings, are extended to the soffits, carrying the interior detail to the exterior.

Detailing in general implied modern Asian aesthetics while still being comfortably within the skin of the original structure. The Asian influences were extended to the site with the Asian-influenced landscaping design.
