The Love Shack

Designed by Wayne Branum
with Timothy Old

A small existing house and garage, built by the owners’ family about 1922, occupied this unique site on the St. Croix River. After investigating remodeling, the owners and the architect concluded that building new was the best option.

The non-conforming site required variances, and ultimately negotiations with the City and Wisconsin DNR. The new home was relocated on site with the same footprint as the original buildings. A large existing retaining wall east of the house required substantial reinforcing due to the close proximity of the building.

The new home incorporates characteristics of the original buildings in form, color and exterior finishes. The interior detailing expresses simple cottage characteristics and nautical elements. Classic materials like wood floors, Cararra marble, painted trim and granite compliment the open light-filled spaces, capturing a perfect panorama of the St. Croix.
