Studio Toile D’Angles

Designed by Paul Hannan

and Jody McGuire, AIA

A musician offered a challenge for the design of a music studio on his property. Design a studio that would be separated, yet connected to his house, be acoustically accommodating while preventing sound to leave the studio, and have access for guests and equipment without entering the home. The new structure is located on an unused portion of the site, adjacent to the existing home. The connection is below grade with a ramp from the existing basement to the lower floor of the studio passing through a display area and by an adjoining lounge area and bathroom. The studio roof slopes up to the sky to allow natural light to stream in through acoustically designed windows. Access from the exterior occurs on the street side for guests and from the alley for equipment. The open studio space was designed to allow for various instrument combinations and seating arrangements required for in studio music performances, as well as for viewing films. The solar array contributes to the electricity required for the studio as well as the home.
